A study of the 71B corridor, between Cato Springs Road and the north city limits (excluding Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. to North St.), is currently underway to identify recommended improvements to the corridor. These will include access management, pedestrian improvements, new signalization and other intersection improvements, aesthetics and branding, and congestion management strategies.
The 71B corridor serves as the major north-south arterial through the central part of the City, and also is a major commercial and retail destination. Maintaining and improving the corridor will allow it to continue to serve mobility needs, and to continue to develop/redevelop as a commercial corridor.
What is the Current Status?
The draft study report is complete and available here. Recommended initial projects include an extension of Plainview Avenue to Appleby Road; improvements to the Archibald Yell Blvd. & the Rock Street intersection; a re-design of the North Street to Township Street segment; and design of the Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. to Cato Springs Road segment.
Selection committee interviews for the design engineer was held on May 5, 2020. A contract for engineering design services will be presented to the City Council after a scope and fee have been established for the contract.
When Will it be Completed?
Design of the North Street to Township Street segment will be completed by 2022. Construction schedules are still to be determined. See separate project pages for Archibald Yell Blvd., and the Appleby/Planview projects.
How is it Funded?
Funding for the project comes from the Bond issue that voters approved in April 2019.
