City Council to Vote on Acceptance of
$1.77 Million Walton Family Foundation Grant
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Today, City officials learned that Fayetteville was awarded one of five Northwest Arkansas Design Excellence Program grants from the Walton Family Foundation. A resolution to accept the $1.77 million dollar grant will go to City Council for approval on December 5. The Downtown Springdale Alliance, the Community Development Corporation of Bentonville/Bella Vista and the cities of Bentonville and Rogers also received grants.
In March 2017, the Walton Family Foundation invited local governments and non-profits to submit grant applications for parks, green space, and public plaza ideas. Applicants were asked to submit “innovative ideas for public spaces that would increase public access and leverage the region’s existing trail network. In addition, projects had to show a commitment to sustainability by encouraging residents and visitors to engage with the spaces in new ways.”
The City of Fayetteville grant is for planning and design assistance to improve infrastructure and create connected public spaces of City-owned property in a “Cultural Arts Corridor.” The area spans from W. Dickson Street to W. Prairie Street and from Gregg Avenue to School Avenue. Cultural institutions such as the Walton Arts Center, the Community Creative Center, and the Fayetteville Public Library are already established. TheatreSquared’s new facility is currently under construction and the Library is scheduled to begin its campus expansion in 2019. The grant will also help with design of undeveloped park land adjacent to a section of the regional Razorback Greenway in the corridor area.
“I really want to thank the Walton Family Foundation for their continued support and investment in Fayetteville,” said Mayor Lioneld Jordan. “This opportunity will help us continue our efforts to keep Fayetteville creative and unique while attracting visitors and retaining citizens.”
